FUE vs. FUT
Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) are methods to extract hair from the donor area.

FUT – A surgeon removes a strip of skin from the donor area. This strip will leave a scar but is easily covered if you wear your hair longer than a 1/2″. FUT is generally more cost-effective because it takes less time to harvest the hair.

FUE – A surgeon removes hair follicles in small regions around the donor area. This method is less invasive and is almost undetectable, allowing you to wear your hair shorter than a 1/2″. FUE is more expensive because it takes more time to harvest the hair.

{personal note} I chose FUE because I like my hair shorter and wanted to have more options.

Follicular Units
Also referred to as Grafts. These are the natural grouping of your hair from the extraction. Hair naturally grows in groups of 1-4. The follicular units will be transplanted to your recipient area.

{personal note} A large number of my follicular units were 2-3 hairs. They needed to split up some of these grafts to have more individual grafts. They used 1 hair grafts in the front for a more natural appearance, then used 2 hairs, followed by 3 to give a more natural look.

Donor Site
The area on the sides and/or back of your head where the follicular units are extracted.

Recipient Site
The area on top of your head where the extracted follicular units will be implanted.
